Lakeside Attractions

Gravenhurst, Muskoka - Ontario

The Gravenhurst Album

As a photographer who enjoys capturing the essence of architectural beauty, I travel in search of unique structures that tell compelling stories. Gravenhurst, nestled in the heart of Muskoka, Ontario, became my latest must see town where modernity seamlessly intertwines with the nostalgic charm of cottage-style architecture by the lakeside.

Gravenhurst, often hailed as the Gateway to Muskoka, holds a cherished place in the hearts of visitors and locals alike. Its allure stems from the pristine lakes, dense forests, and rugged terrain that have captivated adventurers for over a century and a half.

Upon arriving at Muskoka Wharf, I was immediately drawn to the sight of historic steamships gently bobbing in the crystal-clear waters. The air was crisp with the scent of pine, and the sound of lapping waves provided a soothing backdrop to my exploration. I strolled along the scenic boardwalk that hugged the shoreline, camera in hand, eager to capture the intricate details that define Gravenhurst's architectural character

These two buildings, distinguished by their decorative wooden roof undersides, are where preparations for the boat tours are conducted. At one time, these boats served utilitarian purposes, transporting locals and goods around the area. Today, they provide sightseeing tours for visitors who, on sunnier days, may occupy these benches.

In its early days, Gravenhurst welcomed travelers who arrived by train, journeying to Muskoka Wharf where they embarked on steamships bound for summer retreats and holiday resorts. Today, echoes of this bygone era can still be experienced through leisurely cruises aboard historic vessels like the RMS Segwun, the oldest operating steamship in North America.

I spotted a few gazebos along the boardwalk: colorfully painted metal roof construction, complete with mock pigeon houses, as well as more traditional cedar shingled constructions that blend in niceley with their environment. Offering shaded respite from the sun, these gazebos invite visitors to linger and soak in panoramic views of the tranquil waters and lush greenery that define the lakeshore landscape of Gravenhurst.

The wharf buildings around the lakeshore of Gravenhurst showcase a delightful array of architectural styles, each offering a unique perspective on lakeside charm. From classic Victorian-inspired designs with intricate latticework and gingerbread trim to rustic timber-framed structures that blend harmoniously with the natural surroundings, every building tells a story of relaxation and appreciation for the serene beauty of Muskoka.

Muskoka Wharf remains a focal point, offering a picturesque boardwalk that traces the shoreline. Here, visitors can indulge in a variety of culinary delights ranging from chef-prepared specialties to casual fare, complemented by cozy cafes and charming tea houses. Anchored at one end by the historic steamship cruise office and at the other by the Muskoka Discovery Centre museum, the wharf blends history with contemporary amenities seamlessly.

The Alexander Muskoka Residence in Gravenhurst offers a prime location for enjoying the beauty and activities of Muskoka. Situated close to the Muskoka Wharf, residents can enjoy waterfront views and the bustling cultural events that take place there year-round. It seems like a lovely place for those looking to embrace lakeside living and the charm of small-town Muskoka.

The lakeshore is lined with a walkway that allows visitors and residents to enjoy a leisurely promenade, dotted with trees, gazebos, shops, and cafes, and to take in the beautiful sights. Small 'shed'-style buildings are also visible, used by vendors as market stalls. Currently, I only saw one open, selling slippers and other beach-friendly accessories.

Two larger buildings piqued my interest. They were very colorful, with bright red-painted scaffolding on the exterior, supporting balconies. One of the buildings was painted yellow, and the other was blue. They both featured what I heard was called 'Regency Cottage' style, although in this case, transposed onto a much larger multi-storey residential structure.

The Muskoka Discovery Centre is a museum located in Gravenhurst, Ontario, Canada. It focuses on celebrating the culture, history, and environment of the Muskoka region, which is known for its beautiful lakes and forests. The centre offers exhibits and displays that explore various aspects of Muskoka's heritage, including its Indigenous history, early settlers, boat-building traditions, and natural environment.

Visitors to the Muskoka Discovery Centre can learn about the significance of steamships and wooden boats in the region, as well as enjoy interactive exhibits that showcase the area's biodiversity and conservation efforts. The museum also hosts events, workshops, and educational programs throughout the year, making it a hub for both residents and tourists interested in Muskoka's rich cultural and natural heritage.

Making your home along the 'Gateway to Muskoka' must be an inspiring way to relax. I cannot help but feel that being in such close proximity to quintessential panoramic Canadian natural beauty is a fine way to enjoy the summer, as well as life in general.
